The commitment of the Teruggi family in the food industry began five generations ago, in the mid-30s.

The precursor was Giovanni’s great-grandfather, called Anselmo. He opened an artisanal charcuterie factory, with the help of his family, and began to distribute his products in the neighboring towns and villages. The business expanded over time, until they began to export their cold cuts in nearby Switzerland. While the production inside the factory kept increasing, the children and grandchildren of grandpa Anselmo sold their products dealing directly as street traders, in the open-air markets in the squares of the neighboring villages.

This activity also involved Giovanni junior, who recalls having taken part to many Sunday trips in Langhirano, where his family and him went to pick the best Parma hams, or in the dairy factories near Reggio Emilia where they went to personally buy the wheels of Parmigiano Reggiano. The product selection activities also included a couple of trips per year to San Daniele, to choose raw hams and cheeses from Friuli, and even a few visits to the Valsesian mountain pastures, where they bought typical cheeses from local shepherds.

During the school holidays, Giovanni was always busy helping his father and grandfather, in their village shops.

In 1964, Giovanni decided to get fully involved in the family business. This was also necessary because of the increased need for manpower following the opening of a further deli: the third family store.

In the early, 70s Giovanni momentarily distanced himself from the family business to fulfil  the desire to specialize further. He began thus working in the best delicatessen of Novara, learning the craft from those who were more qualified and experienced than himself. After several months of apprenticeship, feeling sufficiently prepared, Giovanni gave birth to the gastronomy department inside the family shops.

In 1973 Giovanni was offered a job in the sales organization of Monda Knorr, as an area sales representative. He accepted with enthusiasm: life within the family stores was not enough for him anymore. Thus began his career as a salesman.

After a few years, he went to work for Simmenthal, maintaining the same role.

Since 1976, Giovanni began to manage and expand the sales organization of the Teruggi charcuterie factory, reopened by his father’s cousin. He remained there until 1981, when he decided to begin working as an independent salesperson.

In 2009 Giacomo, Giovanni’s son, joined the family business, bringing a further innovative boost. After a period of apprenticeship, his help enabled the company to expand into other regions of Italy and, later on, to move most of its efforts on the export of Italian food excellences in the world.

With the start of World War II, given the conditions of financial straits that were applied to the citizens, but also due to the departure to war of some of the youngest relatives, the Teruggi family decided to close the charcuterie factory and dedicate themselves exclusively to the trade of eggs and meat.

The hostilities finally ended, but after the death of Grandpa Anselmo his sons took different paths.

Anselmo’s eldest son, Giovanni senior, with the help of his own son Giuseppe, opened a butcher shop and a delicatessen in the square of Grignasco, their native village. The two businesses prospered until they became a point of reference for gourmets from all over the area. In fact, to meet the needs of their customers, father and son began the research and selection of Italian food excellences. By doing so, they were able to serve the best products in their stores.
